Essential Business Skills

Have you ever thought of starting and running a business? At first, you may feel that it is easy to build one. Well, it is not that simple. For your business to be successful, you need to develop and improve your skills, which will be tackled in the next paragraph. These skills are not just ideal skills, but they are fundamental and necessary skills.

First, financial management. Of course, we all know that business requires money. This is an essential skill from the term itself, and you need to learn how to manage your finances properly. You should learn how to monitor your sales, etc. Having this skill will help you run your business smoothly and profitably, and, most of all, it will protect your financial investment. According to Utpal Dholakia Ph.D.,  “Without knowing one’s financial situation well on an ongoing basis, it is hard to make sound financial decisions, feel financially secure, or prepare for retirement.”

Second, marketing, sales, and customer service.  In business, you need to have a marketing strategy for you to generate sales. You need to learn how to promote your products or services effectively. One example of a marketing strategy is an advertisement. Since we are living in a world of technology, you can easily promote your business through social media or maybe on television or radio. You may also advertise through newspapers. Providing excellent customer service plus a marketing strategy would, for sure, help you generate sales.

Third, communication and negotiation. “Sharing your thoughts and understanding another person’s feelings are essential skills for functioning in any society in the world,” Will Meek Ph.D. points out. Business without connection will inevitably lead your business to waste. These two are very important since you need to have a proper conversation if you ever need to supply and invest. You also need to communicate and negotiate with your customers and employees, not just verbal means but also in writing. Having this skill will help you build good relationships with other people.

Fourth is leadership. In business, there are always employees. “Leadership is a form of interpersonal behavior and involves certain individuals influencing and directing the behaviors, attitudes, and thoughts of others,” Michael D. Matthews, Ph.D., explains. Since you are the person who is in charge of your employees, then that means you should be a good leader and role model to them. You need to bring out what’s the best in them to increase your business’ productivity. Also, give or allocate some of your time to coach and mentor your employees. In employing people, leadership is a crucial skill.

Fifth, project management and planning. In starting a business, you need to learn how to manage your projects like setting up a website, developing some rules and procedures, and arranging the fit-out of your premises. It is imperative to manage your resources and, most of all, your time. If you can do this, then this will help you in achieving your goals.

Sixth, delegation and time management. Delegation means the act of giving control to others. In business, you shouldn’t do all the work; you also need other people to do the job for your business to succeed. Some business owners fail to delegate because they are reluctant to let go of the control; this is why this skill needs to be developed and practiced. To manage your time, you have to delegate some of the tasks to your employees.

Seventh, the problem-solving business will never get away with issues. If your business encounters some problems, you need to think of a way to solve it. Don’t let that problem ruin everything.

Lastly, networking. If you build good relationships in networking, not only it will help your business to grow, but it will also have the support that you need. You can join some business associations, too, for your network to grow.

Running a business is not that easy. There’s no harm in seeking help or assistance if you are not sure of your skills and abilities. Developing these essential skills will provide your business with a solid foundation.

How To Succeed As An Entrepreneur While Still A Student

In the past, the primary goal of students is to be employed in a large corporation after they graduate. This is not the case these days. The millennial generation is the most entrepreneurs. Students these days have realized that getting a degree in college is not an assurance that a company will hire them after they graduate. Young people nowadays want to be their boss and own their own business. However, most students do not succeed as entrepreneurs. “While there has been some funding for start-ups based on academic research, there has been no direct funding to universities to support student entrepreneurship,” says Dr. John Whelan, MD of Trinity College Dublin. Here are seven tips that most students who are starting their own business usually forget.

Tip #1: Acquire The Proper Mindset.

A student’s general mood and emotions can have an impact on their actions and thoughts. Students who procrastinate often end up struggling to complete their class assignments during weekends. Students who have decided to be entrepreneurs should have the proper positive mindset. They will be very busy on weekends as they are already swamped during weekdays with their classes. They should be committed to their business ventures.

Tip #2: Be Organized.

Juggling your time between schoolwork and a business venture will be very difficult. Some students fail to do both. Some students are not able to provide sufficient time for their business venture, and it does not take off. And some students spend too much time on their business ventures and neglect their studies.

This difficulty can be avoided if the student is organized and schedules their time appropriately. The student could do school work during the daytime and work on their business venture during the nighttime.

Tip #3: Select The Appropriate College Course.

The student should select a college course that is relevant to their business venture. Or, if they have already chosen a college course, then they should choose a business venture that is relevant to their college course. If the student intends to start a business based on a mobile application, then they should select a course with a major in software development. The information the student acquires from their college classes will be beneficial in their business venture.

Tip #4: Take Advantage Of The Resources Available In College.

Students have access to various resources in college. They have access to the library. They can use meeting rooms. Internet access is usually free for students. There are also printing and copying services available to students. And the student can ask for advice from the instructors and professors. Students also can avail of various discounts, such as software applications. And students can tap fellow students for work or projects.

Tip #5: Acquire Skills In Leadership

“There is a problem in the workplace with incoming college grads not being prepared enough for the grueling and sometimes ruthless world of work,” says Dr. Joanie Connell, Ph.D., president and CEO of Flexible Work Solutions and author of Flying Without a Helicopter: Preparing Young People for Work and Life.  Being the boss does not necessarily make you a good leader. Good leaders do not micromanage their employees. Micromanagement stifles the team. A good leader provides direction but delegates tasks while trusting the employees. Good leaders motivate their teams. They provide praise for a job well done. They effectively communicate with their team members. They create a safe and nurturing work environment that is conducive to creativity and productivity.

Tip #6: Take Advantage Of Internships.

“Do your best to integrate and connect to the local ecosystem,” says Dr. Arlen Meyers, MD,  professor emeritus at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and president and CEO of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs. Internships provide available working knowledge of the corporate world. Students experience working in an office environment. They encounter fellow employees and interact with management. They get the opportunity to deal with clients. Internships provide a great hands-on experience of what a student learns in the classroom. Internships also provide the student with contacts that will be useful in their business venture.

Tip #7: Take Precautions.

The entrepreneur should take precautions against their intellectual property being stolen. They should acquire the appropriate trademarks, copyrights, and patents.

Managing Business And Personal Life Excellently (Tips From A Psychologist)

Being an entrepreneur can be rewarding yet stressful all at the same time. The most common misconception is that rich people are always happy. Well, the truth is that it is not always the case. The reality is that money may be essential for everyone, but it is not the only source of happiness and contentment. As such, you can still see many people in business who end up seeking professional help from an online counselor (typically through BetterHelp), therapist, or psychologist because they no longer have any idea of how to get on with life.

There are several reasons why these entrepreneurs seek the assistance of mental health experts. One of the common causes is having sleepless nights arising from depression and anxiety. Because of the import/export entrepreneurs’ mental health pressure that they get in managing their businesses, they seldom find themselves in a moment of extreme sadness and grief. They could not understand why they were feeling in such a way, even though they had lots of cash in their bank accounts. There are also some entrepreneurs who do it because they seem to find something missing in their lives, despite the success that they have achieved over the past few years.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, do not worry because what you are going through is only normal. Take note that you are not the only person who has tons of questions about your existence in this world as well as your purpose in life. If you want to find solutions to your problems, be sure to check the rest of the article to learn some of the business counseling suggestions on how to find a balance between your business life and personal life. Keep in mind that the change starts within you. Promise yourself that you are going to improve for the better, and everything will begin to change. Here are some of the tips to remember:

Set Goals And Manage Expectations

As much as possible, do not forget the significance of creating objectives that are attainable or achievable within a given time. Do not set plans or goals that are too high or impossible to accomplish. Marilyn Price-Mitchell, Ph.D., supports, “Goals should always be challenging enough to be attainable, but not so challenging that they become sources of major setbacks.” At this point, you need to be right in managing your expectations. Be smart enough to recognize that there are a lot of things that are not under your control. As such, there is a possibility that things will not always turn out the way you want them to be. What is crucial or vital is that you stick to your goals and promise yourself that you will not get discouraged easily. To make things easier on your part, make sure that you know how to set your expectations right.

Find Time To Rest

As already repeated above, money is not the primary source of contentment and happiness in your life. You have always to remind yourself of this fact every single day. Do not consume all your energy and vibe in your business. “Breaks can replenish the psychological costs associated with working hard, improve work performance, and boost energy,” Angela Grippo, Ph.D., explains. Make time for yourself and the people you love. Know when it is the best time to take a rest and prioritize your well-being. At the same time, never neglect to share quality time with the people you love. The more you give time for self-preservation, family, and loved ones, the happier you will become. If it continues to happen for a long time, there is a good chance that you will regain the energy and passion that will help you rise in the business world. Take note that a relaxed version of yourself can help you rise on the business ladder.

Know The Limits

Another thing that you must never forget is to be familiar with your schedule. If you are at the office to manage your business, then dedicate your time to do everything you can in furtherance with the goals and vision of your company. However, once you go home or go out of the office after business hours, promise yourself that you will stop thinking of your firm. Remember that you also have a personal life that you need to focus on. One of the smart things that you can do is to refrain from taking business calls at night-time when you are already at home or during the weekends when you are bonding with the people you love.

All you must do is master the tips and tricks mentioned above. The more you familiarize yourself with these strategies, the easier it will be on your part to feel genuine happiness and contentment. “Aim high, but don’t forget to aim,” Carl Beuke Ph.D. reminds.
